On Wednesday we went on an annual visit to the Rich Mix, rather than the last trip we attended being about our music video and coursework this trip was to help us with the exam side of the course, focusing on Collective Identity.
We first met with Pete and looked at the representations of youth and he gave us areas to cover in the exam
-How the media represent youth in different ways
-How representation differ from those in the past
-The effect of representation
-How youth use media to form collective identity
-How far identity is constructed- through or in response to the media
We then looked at the semiotics of the hood, looking through images of the wearing of the item through time and how today they are often a negative image surrounding youth. We also looked at news coverage and how out of 8600 stories 3400 were about crime, with many words used being 'yobs' 'scum' 'thugs', particularly after the London riots. This made me think about the representation of youth from another perspective and gave me ideas to write about in the exam, rather than choosing Film or TV, its made me more confident to discuss Newspapers.
Pete also gave us some really useful theories regarding the representation of youth such as Stanley Cohen from his book Folk Devils and Moral Panics in which he identifies groups constructed by the media are to blame for these panics (folk devils) and moral panics are sporadic episodes which appear to threaten the basis of social order.
Another theory was Dick Hebdige who in Subculture -the meaning of style identifies ways in which subcultures such a smods and rockers emerge from different cultural influences and young people construct their own identities as collective styles.
This theory enables me to link to Quadrophenia in my exam in which it sees the clash of two subgroups.
In the second half of the day we met with Damon Beesley, the co-creator and writer of The Inbetweeners as he told us all about his experiences in the media, and particularly his portrayal of youth in the show. It was interetsing to gain an incite into how a TV series production was put together and was surprised by the vigorous months of editing it entailed. We watched two episodes of Series one and three and also clips of the film which was really entertaining and interesting hearing the stories behind how they were made.
Overall, I really enjoyed the trip and gained a lot more knowledge due to the use of examples shown to be able to use in the exam regarding the representation of youth.
