Here we gathered what we expected from our target audience, with their main hobbies including shopping and fashion. We also found MTV and 4Music were the most popular music channels of choice, this was a positive answer for us as these are the channels where we would like our video to be shown. We found Indie and Pop were the most popular genres, this fits our genre perfectly and illustrates our target audience will appreciate our song. We also found the audience like fashion which indicates Ruby will be appealing as an artist and her style will be appreciated.

Audience Theory
An audience is a group of people who receive a media text, they receive these texts through a variety of mediums inclusing through Televison and Magazines. For our audience in our Advanced Portfolio, they will receive these through Youtube and Music Channels such as 4Music and MTV, MTV for its high status as a music channel and 4Music due to its pop based features which our video would be shown on.
All media texts are produced with an audience in mind, for the audience of my artist I have in mind a young, modern female aged around 15-25 whose interests include fashion, music and the media.
In order to research companies use questionnaires to find out about peoples life styles and viewing habits, I carried this out in order to find out about my target audience.I did this at the Demographic Group of Groups B and E
B- Creative and media people
E- Students
(these audience demographics are based on the National Readership Survey's socio-economic grades http://www.nrs.co.uk/)
Another form of Audience Reserach is Pyschographics. From looking at the 4 C's (Cross Cultural Consumer Characterisation) I gave people the Pyschographics questionnaire and gained a response that my traget audience is made up of Aspirers- Orientated to image and appearence, persona and fashion. Typically younger people. This demonstartes my target audience are fashion conscious and young which is what our artist Ruby Reigns is, indicating she is catering to her audience.
Hierarchy of Needs- Maslow
Maslow's theory suggests that we as individuals have basic needs, for example the basic needs to eat and sleep up to a higher level of needs such as self esteem and self respect. This theory can be linked to my media text due to it being relevant to audience consuming particulary media texts that boost self esteem. This can be supported as when viewing a music video an audience member may feel better about themselves seeing their insecurities shown in a video, or an artist that reflects their same beliefs.
Another theory surrounding Audience is the idea of audience being passive, with the media injecting ideas to them, with them having no choice. However, today, audience are a alot more aware of the media and these ideas that are injected into them, with their pre conceptions acting as a powerful filter of media messages. For example, in our video the audience is more aware of society and would understand Ruby's feminist views in manipulating Ken, and may oppose the metrosexual ending in which her and Ken live happily ever after, as in todays society unconventional ideas are more widely accepted.
Two Step Flow Theory
Katz and Lazarsfield assumes a slightly more active audience. It suggests media messages move in two ways;
-Information who are opinion leaders receive messages from the media and pass on their own interpreatations
- The audience mediate the information receieved directly from the media, being influenced as a result
This theory relates to our music video as with sites such as Twitter, trends are easily made with people discussing a text/product and leads to popularity on Youtube. These trends are also due to videos people may have watched on music channels, which is where our product is aimed to be shown on.
Active Audiences
This theory sees individuals as active individuals who interact and use media texts for their own purposes.
For example as individuals we behave differently depending on our different backgrounds; attitudes, experiences, ideas and values.
This theory is a more realistic way to talk about audiences .
Uses and Gratifications Model
This model is the idea that audiences select media texts that best suit their needs (Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs). The model suggests that media audiences are active and make active decisons about what they consume in relation to their cultural and social setting and needs. Meanings are not fixed, they can be decoded or negotiated between the media producers intended reading and the audiences actual reading.
Blumier and Katz in 1974- 'Media usage can be explained in that it provides gratifications (meaning it satisfies needs) related to the satisfaction of social and psychological needs'
This quote illustrates that audiences choose to watch texts that make them feel good or to give them information they can use or learn from.
1. Surveillance- Our need to know what is going on in the world. This relates to Maslows need for security. By keeping up to date with news about events we as individuals feel we have the knowledge to avoid or deal with dangers.
2. Personal relationships/Social interaction- Our need to interact with others, this is provided by forming virtual relationships with characters in film,tv,drama and other media texts.
3. Personal Identity- Our need to define our identity and sense of self, commonly found by making judgements about people and things for example TV characters as well as making judgements towards celebrities. Our expression of identity can relate from our choice of music, shows we watch and celebrities we like. This is value reinforcement as we choose texts that hold similar beliefs to what we hold and an relate to them through their situations.
4. Diversion- the need to escape, be entertained and relax.
When thinking about my own media text, our music video satisfys the audiences need for escapism as our video uses humour and quirky situations (Diversion). Our video also relates to Personal Identity as the audience may relate to Ruby Reigns and the relationship in the video, of taking control or having a disfunctional relationship. This allows the audience to identify with the artist.

Draft 2
Here is a rough second draft of our video. We have now filmed the Scrabble beginning but are yet to edit it into place yet. As you can see the lip syncing is still rough, once we know the correct order of the video and have edited everything in we will be able to edit the lip syncing to the beat. Also, we have decided we do not like the Lips aspect to the video with the lip transfers due to you being able to see where the transfer is, we have decided that we will most probably use plain lipstick instead in order to make the video look more professional and seamless. We have also found a solution to the shot of Ken being hit, we have found a transition that looks like a ball is coming towards the screen which fades to black. We will also make a POW! Sign in order to add to the comedy element of the video and make it more obvious that Ken is being hit.
We still have a lot of editing to do but we are getting there slowly!

Toast Stop Animation
Here we have edited our stop animation of toast which we will use as a cutaway shot when she Ruby realises her love for Ken. We liked the effect of this as it is snappy and tells a story within our own story, indicating her love for him goes away.

Filming
On Monday we set out to film our Valentines Day scene. We firstly set out the table with romantic items such as confetti and candles and also made toast with I LOVE YOU imprinted on it. We filmed panning shots of the table leading to Ruby sitting at the end looking unimpressed and angry at Ken for being late. We also filmed an argument scene that will be used before she reminisces over the good times they have had together. We also did lipsyncing shots of her, after him handing her a rose which is the moment where she thinks about her and Ken. To make it look effective we made a mini rose for Ken to hold and contrasted this with a human sized rose, but we will edit it to look like a seamless transition as if the rose increases in size as he hands it to Ruby.
Next, we filmed the opening scene in which Ruby is looking through pictures of her and Ken, we did this in a number of locations in order for us to decide what looks best when editing. For example, we did the first scene on a plain canvas in the living room to draw attention to the photos whilst we also filmed a scene of Ruby looking through them in her bedroom, we think we may use the blank canvas as using Rubys bedroom scene is quite stereotypical, of a girl being in a girly room thinking about her relationship.
Overall, the filming was a success and we are eager to edit our footage using our new skills in Final Cut.

Lastly, we did the lip tattoos for the lip syncing of whistles. They proved difficult to both apply and remove but we managed to get a few decent shots of lipsyncing using different patterns. If they do not look effective when editing we will have to refilm.
Whilst filming we gained a lot of inspiration and ended up filming alot of stuff which was not from our stroryboard. For example we filmed bites being taken out of the toast which we thought we could use for stop animation. Also we filmed Ruby and Ken on the sofa, one scene her being angry at him and the other where she is happy and loving. We thought we could do a split screen of her two moods using Final Cut oro due to us being taught to use it last lesson.

Today we are ordering these tattoo lip transfers for our lipsyncing for filming on Monday as due to our previous filming we gathered it did not look effective using plain lipsticks and by using prints such as union jack and leapord print these will grab the audiences attention and also add to the quirkiness of our artist.
Plans to Film
In todays lesson we have arranged to film on Monday, due to it being Valentines Day on Tuesday we thought we would take advantage of this and buy the cheesiest cliche stuff we can find including confetti and chocolates. We have planned to film a scene of Ruby cooking Ken a romantic dinner, but Ken is late, leading to a massive argument. This is the moment in which Ruby reflects on all of the good memories with Ken and that is where we show all of their happy memories together. Also, Ken will hand her a rose which will be his size but when he hands it over to her it will be human size, we are hoping to use an editing technique to make the transition of handing it over look real, we will use a small and big flower to do this.
As well as the dinner scene, on Monday we hope to film other parts for our video such as the polaroid scene where Ruby is looking through the photos. We thought we could use a bedroom so Ruby is in her own environment looking back at images of her and Ken. Also, as my house has many rooms we thought we could use my living room and film Ruby and Ken on the sofa, for fill in shots, perhaps of them cuddling watching TV or perhaps arguing.
Hopefully, we will get a lot done and our video will come together quickly!

Logo Research
Here I have researched several female artists logo and have found similarities between them. Black and white seems to be common colours due to its boldness and ability to grab the audiences eye. Also images are also used, which I am thinking of using for my own, such as Katy Perry who uses hearts and Florence who uses random cartoon images, this gives the artist more identity and associates them with a certain genre.
Here are ideas for my own logo, I decided to use a crwon image in order to represent the Reigns; and royalty theme of her name. This also fit in with conventions of other artists logo in which images are used in order to express the artists brand or identity.

Here we have gathered a very basic draft of our opening, the lip syncing is off and we have used blank screens to indicate what we will place there instead, for example at the beginning of the video we will use photographs to show the times Ken and Ruby have had together. The draft indicates the part of the video where Ruby resents Ken and is annoyed at him, then we will have a turning point where she realises that she misses him. We will do an argument scene which sparks off Ruby to think about her happy times with Ken, which will follow with the sequence 'Dreamt you were on a train', this is the moment where she comes back to him.
